Set in Rome between 1938 and 1943, La guerra di Elena tells the extraordinary story of Elena Di Porto, a strong, independent, and daring Jewish Roman woman who defied the fascist regime to save many lives, leaving her mark in the history of Rome’s Jewish ghetto during fascism and the nazi occupation.
Continua a leggereA bold woman in dark times.
Being different takes courage—it means risking marginalization and punishment. However, rebels are not only the first to recognize when something limits freedom; they are also the first to react, even if they stand alone in their cause. And that is exactly what Elena does.
Elena is an unconventional woman: separated from her husband, she wears trousers, smokes, drinks, and plays pool. That’s why, in the Roman ghetto, they call her “Elena la matta” (Elena the mad woman).
Her rebellious and fearless nature leads her to clash multiple times with the fascists who terrorizes the neighborhood. Arrested on several occasions, Elena never backs down. When the Nazis occupy Rome, Elena joins the resistance. She manages to discover in advance the plans for the roundup of the ghetto (which took place on October 16, 1943) and tries to warn her fellow citizens—but can the voice of a “mad woman” be taken seriously ?
